In controller software releases prior to 4.2, peer-to-peer blocking is applied globally to all clients on all WLANs and causes traffic between two clients on the same VLAN to be transferred to the upstream VLAN rather than being bridged by the controller.

The peer to peer computing architecture contains nodes that are equal participants in data sharing. All the tasks are equally divided between all the nodes. The nodes interact with each other as required as share resources.

A diagram to better understand peer to peer computing is as follows −

Characteristics of Peer to Peer Computing

The different characteristics of peer to peer networks are as follows −

  • Peer to peer networks are usually formed by groups of a dozen or less computers. These computers all store their data using individual security but also share data with all the other nodes.
  • The nodes in peer to peer networks both use resources and provide resources. So, if the nodes increase, then the resource sharing capacity of the peer to peer network increases. This is different than client server networks where the server gets overwhelmed if the nodes increase.
  • Since nodes in peer to peer networks act as both clients and servers, it is difficult to provide adequate security for the nodes. This can lead to denial of service attacks.
  • Most modern operating systems such as Windows and Mac OS contain software to implement peer to peer networks.

Advantages of Peer to Peer Computing

Some advantages of peer to peer computing are as follows −

  • Each computer in the peer to peer network manages itself. So, the network is quite easy to set up and maintain.
  • In the client server network, the server handles all the requests of the clients. This provision is not required in peer to peer computing and the cost of the server is saved.
  • It is easy to scale the peer to peer network and add more nodes. This only increases the data sharing capacity of the system.
  • None of the nodes in the peer to peer network are dependent on the others for their functioning.

Disadvantages of Peer to Peer Computing

Some disadvantages of peer to peer computing are as follows −

  • It is difficult to backup the data as it is stored in different computer systems and there is no central server.
  • It is difficult to provide overall security in the peer to peer network as each system is independent and contains its own data.

I am part of a network connected to the same router, which gives us access to the internet via an ADSL broadband modem. I manage the router and would like to know how to create a peer-peer network with the other laptops on our wireless network.

  3. You said the other laptops are on your wireless so if I understand correctly they are already on the same network and should be able to communicate with each other.

Could you please elaborate what you are trying to do and what you mean by 'peer-peer network'?

    • It would appear that the OP wants to set up a peer-to-peer network (or workgroup) on his LAN without the need for dedicated servers. I am assuming (yeah, I know assuming is not proper form) that he needs help in setting up sharing on the various Mac nodes since they should all be able to talk to each other already since they can all hit the internet as currently configured.

    • u r right, we are all already On the same netwOrk, sO i guess my questiOn then shOuld have been: hOw dO i cOmmunicate with the Other laptOps?

      • Once again, you have to be more specific what you want to do. On a network everything is part of a communication.
Do you want to share files, chat with each other, screen-sharing?

You could open up Terminal (Mac) or the command line (Windows) and ping the IP of another device on the network by entering 'ping '. If everything is working you will receive answers packets and the time in ms will be shown in the window.
That is one example of communication ~ obviously, nothing productive but mostly used for troubleshooting networks.

Use two-factor authentication for security on your Mac, iOS devices, and iPadOS devices. Two-factor authentication is an extra layer of security for your Apple ID designed to ensure that you’re the only one who can access your account—even if someone knows your password. See the Apple Support article Two-factor authentication for Apple ID. Software & Apps. Two-factor authentication apps for iOS. Posted on February 8th, 2019 by Kirk McElhearn We’ve written many times about two-factor authentication (2FA) on this blog, and why it’s essential to protect your accounts in this way. When you set up 2FA, most services send you a code by SMS by default, but many services also allow you to use a 2FA app, which you can run on your Mac. 2 factor authentication mac app.

If you want to share files and folders you will have to setup a network share and then access it from the other devices.

        • If the computers usually have internet connection I suggest using some existing chat protocol and client e.g. Skype or Live/Windows Messenger.

If you want a LAN based solution the easiest thing probably is to run iChat on the Macs and setup a Bonjour account and on Windows use some opensource messenger that supports iChat/Bonjour plugin e.g. Pidgin

Setting up iChat should be straight forward, it will go through the settings with you.

On Windows you will need Bonjour
          http://www.apple.com/support/bonjour/
          and a iChat/Bonjour client e.g.

        • Sorry, I put in the wrong link to Bonjour.

The following link to Bonjour is from the Pidgin Wiki
